The German IPCC Coordination Office

In 1998, the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) established the IPCC Coordination Office under the umbrella of the Project Management Agency of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR e.V.) in Bonn.
Since then, the German IPCC Coordination Office fulfils the following tasks:

  • Assisting BMBF and BMU in IPCC matters, i.a.
o Integration of German experts in IPCC work
o Coordination on the national and the European level
o Cooperation with the international IPCC Secretariat in Geneva
  • Continuously informing the German research community about IPCC work and the relevant environment
  • Advice on technical issues and identification of additional research needs, drawing also on external expertise
  • Administrative and technical support of experts nominated by the German federal government and accepted by IPCC (esp. authors and review editors)
  • Informing the public on IPCC work, e.g. by translating IPCC publications into German

By this, the German IPCC Coordination Office helps to integrate the results of German research groups in the international assessment on climate change as well as to disseminate IPCC findings in the German public.

  • The "Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation" (SRREN) was agreed and released by the IPCC on May 9th in Abu Dhabi
The report of the IPCC working group III shows how renewable energy sources can be intregrated into existing and future energy systems, which environmental and social questions arise from this, which technical challenges exist, and at what cost the share of renewable energy sources can be raised. It is shown that the technical potential of renewable energy sources is a multiple of the global need. Communication of the BMU (in German). More Information (including full report).
